Happy Chinese New Year & Valentine's Day

The 1st day of Chinese New Year (CNY).

As I have mentioned in my Facebook before,
I will be going to Bentong to visit an old relative, which we call her as 'second ganny',
She is the younger sister of my father's mother.

Speaking of her.
She works in a Chinese Temple in Bentong,
She prays and wishes luck to be granted to people from the Chinese Gods.
You may say she is the middle person who interacts between the Gods and the Humans.
But she is not that type who lets God takes over her body that kind.
She just prays and prays and prays for you.
And her whole life practically devoted to the temple she works at.
No, she isn't married nor has any children.
Oh.
She does has one or fews, because, she adopted them.
Sadly, I only know few things about her.
I know that she has one adopted son or daughter?
I bet it is the son, who married a Malay lady and is living far away from her.
Well, I don't want to talk about Chinese-marries-into-Malay stuff.
Since some of you might already get the idea.

Before we set off to Bentong,
We were at my uncle's house, (my father's younger brother)
There were 8 of us, me, my parents, elder bro, older sis, aunt (my father's older sis), aunt's husband and uncle.
We had our lunch, vegetarian foods, together.

2:30PM, we were off to Bentong.
My bro fetched me, dad and sis, while mom sat in uncle's car.

We arrived in the Chinese Temple where our 2nd-granny works at,
It was around 3:30PM.
My uncle was yet to arrived.
They were finding fruits, chicken rice, coffees and things to be serve to worship the Gods & ancestors.

My sis and I were terribly bored.
The temple was all smokes and it pained my eyes...
I decided to take few pictures to kill the time.

Funny that my hometown is in Kuala Lumpur, Sg. Besi, Jln Loke Yew...
This temple locates in Bentong, Jln Loke Yew.
What a coincidence.

See those standing Chinese matches?
I heard it cost RM600-800 for EACH matches.
And I tell you, it seems that one can last burning from 4 to 7 days.
Depends on the speed of the wind blows and its quality/material.

After the short visit, we went off to munch ice-cream/ice-kacang,
This ice-cream/ice-kacang store is really popular.
Well, it's in our custom to have it if we are in Bentong.
I don't know why.
But it tastes reaaaallly good.

I like the Yam Ice-cream.
This ice-kacang only contains, ice, red beans, sweet brown sugar/honey and a scoop of ice-cream.
Yum~

After we finished eating ice-creams,
We drove back to the Chinese Temple and the elders have little chats with the 2nd-granny.

Me, sis and bro were bored again.
So we went to disturb the temples' dogs.

They smells.
Bad.
Ah. Well. They are cute too.
At least they didn't bark non-stop and the black ones even wriggled its tail when I approached it.

After their chatting session ended.
Our next stop was to visit another Chinese Temple where my ancestors lays.

As usual,
We lit up the Chinese matches, candles and stuffs.
I went around the temple with the matches and placed 3/2/1 matches in the...ash pots.
Sometimes, if you want to be quick, you would place 3 matches, so yeah we did.

Then, we walked into the room full of the ancestors boards.
Ah, no taking pictures of that room and the boards.
One, it is rude if you believe in spiritual stuffs.
Two, you don't want to see something else in your pictures.
Three, because I just don't take pictures at this kind of place.

Done, praying and worshiping to our ancestors.
We straight away went to eat dinner.
It was 5:30PM or so.

Okay, dinner was okay.
Not too expensive, but it wasn't very tasty.
I didn't eat much because...I don't know...
Recently, my stomach feels full even though I skipped breakfast and rice.
I ate more veggies than meats.
I'm sorry to meat lovers here,
I just hate seeing the-full body-killed-and-cooked-fried-or-roasted chicken and pig meats,
It is soooo disgusting.
It is so cruel.
I know, it is normal to eat them, but, puh-lease...count me out.
Oh.
I do eat shredded chicken meats or porks.
But then, I still like veggies better...
And no, I'm not planning to be a vegetarian.
:)

Home sweet home after such long day.
Here is my review of a novel by Lori Foster.
I heard of Lori Foster before and she's kind of popular for Adult/Romance novels.
This book was actually rent from some rental bookstore but my sis never return it.
So I just took this novel from the bookshelf and read.
I even brought it to Bentong just to release myself from boredom.
Sighs.
I'm not becoming a book-worm.
I'm just becoming a adult/romance-novel freak.
Already a manga freak, anime freak, and KAT-TUN's fan-freak.
XD

"Unexpected"

*snorts*

Yeah, I was really unexpected that the story itself turned into a friggin crap story.
Sorry, Lori Foster-san.
Let me tell you the tiny details of this novel.

First, I enjoy seeing how the female protagonist, Ray (Ray Jean Vereker) being such an alpha female, strong, courageous, tough, muscular, 31-year-old mercenary/fighter.
Who doesn't know ounce of being lady-like and 'love', other than devoting herself into her job, and her brother, Matt.
She is hired to help a rich 33-year-old male protagonist, Eli (Eli Conners) to save his dumb-arse half brother, Jeremy, who is taken by the guerrillas in Central America.
He is tall, manly, handsome and certainly doesn't look like other typical rich men, because he had hard times to earned what he has now.
Eli seeks for Ray helps but is hesitated because Ray is a woman.
Of course, Ray proves herself being worthy for such mission because she has done plenty and harder mission than that.
Eli starts to fall for Ray and Ray keeps distancing herself from him, though she already feel the attractions that she wants him and she knows he does too.
Okay.
I thought it will be superb to see a story between a female-alpha, who is soooo freaking strong and a determined person with a male who is rich, tough, gentle and not a stuck up.
Easy.
I expect the female will give loads of hard time to the male.
It will be like an encounter between a 'S' female with a 'M' male.
But no.
After few chapters, Ray shows the sign of being a petite woman and hell, she is getting confuse of her feeling towards Eli.
Eli's gentleness and as well as sexualitiness is making Ray's character changing into a weak, silly, confused and short-tempered, an-almost-everyday-having-PMS lady.

-.-

...

What the FUDGE?

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Bring back the STRONG RAY, the supposedly, super 'S' lady!!!!!!

I don't want to see/read that!!

I hate Mary-Sue type of woman!!!!!
And of course I also HATE Gary-Stu type of man!!!!!!
(Gary-Stu is the male type of Mary-Sue)

SHIT.

What is more that the female protagonist, Ray is preggie!!!
She got pregnant because of intercourse-without-protection with Eli in a hotel room after they rescued Jeremy from the Central Amerianca guerrillas!!!
WHATTTTT!!!!
WHAAAATTTTTTT!!!!???

She left Eli that night after that night,
Later, she found out she got pregnant and 5 weeks later, Eli found her.
Eli had promised that he will find her no matter what.
Why?
Duh'.
Because he loves her! He said.
Knowing she got preggo and he asked or rather DEMANDED! her to marry him.
She was weaker than before.
No long a friggin-tough-like-hell mercenary woman...
Okay then, happily ever after, after she agreed to go to his ranch, met his grandparents and nodded in agreement of getting married to Eli.

...

I can't believe that story ended like that...
I don't know why some people find this kind of story interesting.
I certainly don't like that kind of story.

Well, good, it is time for me to go for another book...

Ops.
I totally forgot about Valentine's Day.
Ah.
I don't celebrate Valentine's Day.
Mostly it is because I don't have a lover/boyfriend/partner to celebrate with.
I had singles party for Valentine's Day before, but nowadays, all my friends aren't single anymore,
Plus they're not in KL or Malaysia.
Sighs.
What is more, today is the 1st day of CNY too.
Hopeless. Totally.

Wish you all couples out there had a blast~

That is it for today~

Ciao~

  1. The family just returned home from a CNY visit to Bentong, the picturesque town where my wife and her extended family siblings grew up.

We also paid the customary visit to the 111-year Kwong Fook (Si Yeh Kong) Taoist temple for "sip tai sui" prayers where "Ah Poh" your "second granny" stated in your post offered prayers to Tai Sui on my family's behalf.

As me and the wife don't know how to recite the prayers we always engage "Ah Poh" to do the recitals each time the family visits Bentong for CNY.

I have always wondered about the life of this amazing lady and whether if she has a family for despite her advanced age she is ever sprightly and nimble on her feet. And each passing year apart from her stooping back she appears to look the same person as the year before as if for her, time has stopped still. We don't know her real name nor her age and as the temple caretakers refer her as "Ah Poh" so we address her respectfully as "Ah Poh" each time we request for her service.

I searched Google for information in my effort to write some thing about this famous 111-year old "Si Yeh Kong" temple in my blog when I chanced upon your blog.

At last "Ah Poh" is not just a nondescript label of a temple helper but a real person with a living history of a previous lifestyle. Thank you for your bit of information on your "second granny."

I am completely awed and amazed by this woman's devotion to her work in the temple.

  2. Dear Mr Allen Ng,

Thank you for your comment on my post.
I need to apologize because my English is poor and the language I used wasn't polite in my blog.

I have to clarify something for my 'second granny' background. Honestly, I didn't and still don't pay much attention to my relatives. But since you so happened to have crashed into my blog and I think I should maybe tell you more of my 'second granny' / 'Ah Poh' background history.

She isn't single. She is actually married and had one daughter only who passed away because of cancer. her daughter was the one who was married into a Malay man, she was just 48 years old. She gave birth to few children, but her children don't speak nor understand Chinese. Second granny's grandchildren often send her letters but all were in Malays. She can't read Malays as you might already know, her neighbors helped her and translated them. I don't know when second granny's husband passed away, I heard it was because of old age, a natural death I may say.

Second granny soon decided to 'kai' or adopt a Chinese boy/man as her son. The son is the one who rings the bell and do the drumming in the Temple. He's married with a Chinese woman and has 3 children.

I still remember second granny was looking old and frail few years back but, it's worse to compare to this year. Her health is good and as you could see she was busying herself with the rituals in the Temple. That reminds me of her house, she had few 'Bak Gap's, err, White Parrots. It was sad to see the parrots disappeared one by one every year I went to visit her. Now, I don't think there's any left in her house. I have heard many of the bad rumors that states her life isn't leading well because of her position as 'Ah Poh' to help people 'Sip Tai Sui'. I'm not a superstitious person and I have no comment in it. That's just for your information, since I see that you wish to know more of her.

I do respect her too since she's really something, a real tough lady. After reading your comment, I felt guilty to not have know her better, so I went to ask my mother about second granny. As an excuse also that we're not close, because we don't always visit her in Bentong.

Thank you for wanting to know more of her, my second granny.

    :)

    Regards,
    Yuki Chor

  3. Dear Yuki,

Happy New Year & Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and your family.

I am not offended by the strong language in your writing. Many bloggers, especially young people write the way you do because writing in a casual conversational style and using strong language is the most direct and easiest way to express and verbalise their personalities.

Yes I agree with you that your 2nd granny is a iron woman despite so much suffering.

Once again thank you for your story on the life of this remarkable woman.
